President’s Remarks on “Garden City 2022”

Alabo Charlesye David Charles FNMGS, FNIS, JP 31st President of the NMGS

On behalf of Council and the entire membership of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), it is my pleasure to join the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 57th Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE) tagged “Garden City – 2022” to invite members, friends and associates of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, to participate in the 57th AICE holding from 13-19 March, 2022 at the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt. The conference is being hosted by the Port Harcourt Chapter which covers Rivers and Bayelsa states with three universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Geology. The last time the chapter hosted the NMGS AICE was in 2002.

The conference theme for “Garden City 2022” is Geosciences, Mining and Environmental Sustainability”. The conference theme aptly reflects the increasing global emphasis on the need to enhance long-term environmental quality in all human activities and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change. Environmental issues related to oil and gas exploitation in the Niger Delta have been widely reported. Port Harcourt is located in the Niger Delta and home to operational/administrative offices of major International Oil Companies is uniquely qualified to host the 57th AICE. The on-going remediation activities of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in Ogoni will provide participants a good opportunity to see modern remediation techniques. In addition, the conference also promises participants the revered Rivers’ hospitality, rich culture and exciting Port Harcourt experience.

The conference has been well packaged with several interesting activities to stimulate academic and professional discussions as well as exchange of knowledge and experiences regarding environmental issues and challenges in the development of Nigeria’s geological resources. The students, our professionals of tomorrow, are encouraged to participate actively in order to be adequately equipped to face current and future professional challenges. The conference also provides a unique platform for companies, institutions and states in the region to exhibit their services and products to a wide spectrum of potential customers.
